Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. (EWD) is the lead economic development agency for Winnipeg, encompassing EDW, YES! Winnipeg and Tourism Winnipeg. EDW provides market data , assistance and support to grow Winnipeg's economy by supporting existing businesses and attracting investors, events, visitors and new companies to the city. The Market Intelligence and Research team is responsible for data analytics and market intelligence that is used throughout EDW's programs and activities.

The Challenge

EDW's Market Intelligence and Research team wanted to organize their data more efficiently so they could spend less time managing and maintaining all of their various data sources, and more time analyzing them. The team uses a variety of business, tourism, economic indicators and city planning data that currently resides in offsite databases, government sites and in their own data library.

Working with the Market Intelligence and Research team, Online reviewed the organization’s existing processes and reporting assets to understand the current state, analyzed the desired future state, and proposed a solution approach.

The selected approach was to utilize the AWS platform to build an automated process to ingest data from external public data sources into a common repository that EDW could subsequently report from.

Online not only helped on the data and integration side but tackled everything from the creation of EDW’s cloud instance and billing, to recommending tooling to be able to perform the necessary reporting for the team’s internal and external clients.

Online successfully enabled EDW's Market Intelligence and Research team to get the data they needed without any manual intervention.

While the initial scope of this engagement only covered a small number of data sources as a proof of concept to handle one of EDW's required reports, Online continues to work with them to expand their additional data sources, allowing more expansive and detailed reporting to further enable EDQ to delight their customers and stakeholders.

All of this can be done on a platform that has a very low monthly cost, is always available, is accessible from anywhere, and, thanks to Online, has data that is always up to date with the latest information available with no manual intervention.
